The Toshiba satellite A105 is low priced media center laptop. Though comparable laptops offer better performance or battery life, they are pricier that the A105. So if you are looking to get a media center laptop without spending more money, then the Toshiba Satellite A105 is a definite choice.

Just like Toshiba’s other Satellite laptops, the A105 is very low of style. The dark gray, black and silver colored case gives the A105 a dull appearance. Nevertheless, it still can be considered attractive. Coming to the dimensions, measuring 14.2X10.5X1.5 inches and weighing about 6 pounds, this laptop is in between “light and thin” and “midsize” laptop categories. With the AC adapter the A105 weight 7.1 pounds. Though comparable laptops like the Dell Inspirion E1505 are almost of the same size, the A105 weighs much less.

The Satellite A105 has a 15.4 inch wide screen display. The screen has good color contrast but when it comes to resolution, its 1280X800 native resolution is quite disappointing. This resolution is the same as a 12-inch wide screen and so doesn’t provide any additional functional real estate advantage that is expected out of its 15.4 inch size. One can view a word processing document at 150 percent or 17 columns and 36 rows of a spreadsheet at the resolution that the A105 offers.

Despite being low on the display side, the notebook’s multimedia hardware along withToshiba Satellite A105 Windows XP Media Center Edition gives very good performance. The inbuilt speakers are very good though their volume is limited.

Though the A105 is wide enough to have a full size keyword, Toshiba opted for a narrow keyboard. In addition the touch pad is also smaller and lacks a dedicated scroll zone. For the average home user, the A105 provides plenty of ports. These ports include 10/100 Ethernet, 802.11a/b/g WiFi, 4 USB 2.0 ports, 56 Kbps modem, two PC card slots, S-video out, VGA out, headphone and microphone jacks and a 5-in-1 card reader. If you want to use Bluetooth, webcam or a finger print reader, you have buy additional USB peripherals as these are not in built in the A105. The hardware components include a 1.6 GHz Intel Core Duo, 512 MB of RAM, 120 GB hard drive and integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics subsystem. The battery life of the A105 is good. In fact, it beats some of the comparable notebooks in this aspect.

The bundled software that comes with the A105 allows the user to perform all common tasks. Apart from Windows XP, Microsoft Works 8.5, Microsoft OneNote 2003, Sonic RecordNow and InterVideo WinDVD 5 are also included.
